Asheville Poverty & Homelessness: 12 Baskets &More

ReDesign Training is a powerful leadership program based in Charlotte. Our Team of 10 Leaders are creating personal breakthroughs by taking on a group project together. To test our leadership skills, we are creating a charitable endeavor as a group project.
We are committed to making a difference for people experiencing homelessness in Asheville, NC.
Here are the main areas we have researched in which we are raising money and awareness to make a difference:
Lockers And Mailboxes
To make a lasting impact on those seeking to be housed, we are creating partnerships to provide mailboxes for people to receive mail, so they can apply for programs, restore their legal documents, etc. For those living on the land, we recognize the importance of people able to safely store important items and will build decentralized banks of lockers.
Gym Memberships
To support people experiencing homelessness with a variety of needs including showers, restrooms, WiFi, health and wellness equipment and a social network, we will fund gym memberships for a number of Asheville people who are currently unhoused.
Good Neighbor Event
To spread love and connection, we will host a large-scale event for the community, inviting the homeless community to eat, receive supplies, participate in activities, make music, sell crafts, and share themselves with others in the Asheville community.
Our Vision
We (the 55th Masterful Living Team of the ReDesign Training Program) are committed to creating a world that is COURAGEOUS, LOVING, HARMONIOUS and COMPASSIONATE.
At 12 Baskets Cafe, we receive donations of high-quality, surplus food from local businesses and the food service industry. These donations, which would otherwise go to waste, are collected by API companions and repurposed for sharing. Join us in fostering a community where everyone has a seat at the table.
It is an amazing service where they provide a hot meal made through the availability of food that goes unused at local restaurants.
12 Baskets aspires to become a model in other cities around the nation. They would like everyone to know that a new federal law was signed in early 2023 that allows restaurants to donate to soup kitchens and shelters without fear of lawsuits or reprisal, which had been a common reason for restaurants and groceries not to donate their food.
12 Baskets creates a space of MUTUALITY where there is not "volunteers" and "people in need" - - everyone is served and everyone provides service. Those who come to work also sit down and are served a meal. Those who can't afford a meal come early to sweep the floor or do something to be in service to another person there.
