Let's Supply Clean Water to Tijuana Orphans

Donation protected
The Tijuana project of Engineers Without Borders - UCSD is focused on designing, prototyping, and ultimately installing a water filtration system for an orphanage. The local tap water has been tested and has dangerous amounts of heavy metals and other contaminants. The orphanage currently relies on a private water treatment center for drinking water, an expense we are hoping to alleviate. Our team is focused on providing a low maintenance, long-term solution that is also cost effective.

Many of these children at the orphanage have found themselves in unfortunate situations, most of which cannot be solved by university students. However, these children deserve access to clean water. With our experience and engineering knowledge, along with your contribution, we can help supply this basic necessity to these children.

How You Can Make A Difference

Although our team is full of dedicated and knowledgeable university students, our work is limited by the funding we obtain. The water filtration system is complex and robust, requiring us to purchase many expensive components in order to design and construct the best possible system that meets the orphanage’s needs.

Our team needs to purchase the necessary components in order to build / implement a reverse osmosis filter in addition to any replacement filter we will supply to the orphanage. This will allow us to filter out heavy metals and other contaminants from the local tap water. Our team is also considering purchasing a UV light filter in order to ensure no bacteria or other similar contaminants that pass through the first filter or are introduced in the intermediate stage make it through the system.

Similarly we need funding in order to purchase the pumps required to pump the water through the filtration system and to the orphanage. We are also designing a solar system in order to power the filtration system. We have obtained the solar panels that are required, but still need to purchase other necessary components such as batteries, charge controllers, and inverters.

Another goal we have is to prioritize designing the system in an easy-to-use, low maintenance manner. We are planning on implementing a notification system that will allow us to use pH, turbidity, water level, and various other sensors along with the use of a microcontroller in order to alert the users of water quality, potential filter changes, and if the system needs to be filled with water.

Your contribution will help us obtain these components and allow us to execute the design that best meets the needs of the orphanage.
