Hi everyone! My name is Ariel and I am Yasmines sister. When I found out that Yassy and Truman were going to have a baby, I was absolutely over the moon. Yassy and I talked day and night about our kids growing up together, family vacations, watching kids open presents on holidays and basically any other thing that we could dream up.. to make ourselves smile. This story will be explained in 4 phases.
Phase 1.
Yassy and Trumans excitement for their baby radiated off of them as the weeks went by! They went back and forth about names, nursery ideas and the most fun one...what they thought their baby would look like. These two were walking the path to becoming parents and their love for one another, would make them the best parents of all. We now fast forward through time, to the day that their baby was diagnosed with Gastroschisis. You are probably thinking, "What is gastroschisis?" A simple definition would say that this is when the bowel develops outside of the baby's body in the amniotic fluid. As scary as it sounded, the procedure following the birth of the baby...didn't look all that bad! Step one: deliver baby. Step two: wait for bowel inflammation to go down (bowels would be inflamed from the amniotic fluid) Step three: Preform surgery to put the bowels back in place. Step four: Recovery. The baby would also go on to live a completely normal life, if everything went smoothly. The feeling of worry that Yassy and Truman had for their baby BOY remained but the data about the surgery/recovery time looked VERY promising.
Phase2.
"A boy!"
"We can't believe that we are having a boy!"
"Let's name him Arthur."
The weeks went on while Yassy and Truman visited specialists. They absorbed any Information they could regarding this specific condition to know exactly what was happening with Arthur. At 20 weeks pregnant, the appointments started feeling scary. A series of doctors visits throughout the months to come, would tell Yassy and Truman that Arthur may have Downs Syndrome, or that he could have a heart defect. Not being the case in this situation, they continued to be whiplashed with different medical terminology, diagnosis and life threatening outcomes. There was a whirlwind of emotions for these two. Tears. They loved baby Arthur so much. "We just want him to be okay."
Phase 3.
Sunday, September 6th.. Yassy and Truman went to the ER due to not feeling fetal movement. An ultrasound would say everything looked fine.
Tuesday, September 8th..Yassy and Truman went to a routine check up, where the doctor would admit them for loss of fetal movement.
Thursday, September 10th at 6:04pm... Yasmine gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. His name is Arthur. He weighs 4lbs 7oz.
Phase 4.
After Arthur was born, the doctors noticed that his abdominal wall opening was too small.. which restricted blood flow to the bowel outside his body. It was dark in color. This portion of his bowel, called the small intestine, had "died." The small intestine is very important for absorbing nutrients, if you don't have enough.. you will become malnourished and your liver will fail. On Monday September 15th, Arthur had 60% of his small intestine removed. The surgeon created a little opening in his belly, called a Stoma, to allow for that portion of his bowel to try and heal. As Arthur grows, he will have more surgeries. At 12 weeks old, he will undergo another surgery to connect the portion of his small intestine back to his other intestines. Because so much bowel has been removed, Arthur will be on TPN (total parenteral nutrition) for a couple of years. TPN is a slow drip of nutrients (given through a vein) that his body will need. This method is used when a person cannot or should not receive feeding or fluids by mouth. Eventually, in time.. he will taper off TPN and eat normally.
-Yassy, Truman and baby Arthur have a tough road ahead. Arthurs next 6 months of life will not remain at home, they will remain at the hospital. Ronald Mcdonald house charities has donated 1 week towards a hotel stay THIS week. Next week, they start making the 45 minute trips to the hospital and then back again for the next 6 months.
Im reaching out to everyone because this family needs help. The gas will be expensive and the medical bills are STACKING UP. They will also be running back and forth some days to do laundry and these donations would help with that. My mom and I did laundry at there house yesterday and water was pouring out of the bottom of the washer. Yassy said it had been like that for a couple of weeks but that they had been too stressed to focus on it. When drying their clothes, I had take out clothes for the rest to dry OR run the dryer 2 times. (15 years old) Talk about added stress, when the only thing on your mind is your sweet baby. These donations could also help with a hotel on the nights that Arthur needs surgery and is recovering. I cant imagine these 2 people being away from their baby on those nights. Yasmine has extended her time off by 6 MORE weeks of UNPAID leave because of this new path. Please help us take stress off of them. Your donations will help ease them into these very long 6 months to come. Even a $5 donation helps. Yassy, Truman and Arthur have a long road ahead but we can make it easier for them. Let's come together. ❤
