Ardfert V Banna Charity Match, St Stephen's Day 2024

Donation protected
This years St Stephen’s Day memorial game will take on an extra special meaning as we remember three great Ardfert people, Mike Fitzgerald, Gráinne Kavanagh Ennis and Patrick O’Riordan, the game will also be the last game to be played at our club grounds in Sackville before the redevelopment works start in 2025.

This year’s game between an Ardfert and Banna will be half football and half hurling to mark Mike’s, Grainne’s and Patrick’s contribution to the GAA and the community of Ardfert with all proceeds from this years game going to the Kerry Parents and Friends Association Listowel and Castleisland.

Mike Fitzgerald: Mike was an outstanding dual player for St Brendan’s and Ardfert, winning many honours on the field of play and when his playing career was over Mike moved on to be a juvenile mentor and was a member of the very successful Ardfert Senior Football management team that won the Junior Club All Ireland in 2006 and the Intermediate Club All Ireland title in 2007.
Mike also wore the green and gold of Kerry in both codes and was a member of the Kerry Minor Football team in 1983 and played right corner forward against Cork in the Munster Minor Football Championship.

Gráinne Kavanagh Ennis: Gráinne was one of Ardfert Football Club’s most faithful officers and supporters. Her commitment and dedication to her club and community was endless. Gráinne was a loyal St. Brendan’s/Ardfert GAA Weekly Lotto ticket seller and a great supporter of any fundraising draws or events that have been held down through the years in our village. The community was hugely important to Gráinne, being a member of various committees over the years, she was heavily involved in making the Christmas lights in the village green a reality, raising the vital funds to purchase the lights each year and then organising the help that was needed to light up the green for the Christmas season.

Patrick O’Riordan: Patrick summed up everything that is great about the GAA, firstly as a player with St Brendan’s winning many honours on the field of play and then moving on to give his time as a team mentor and working in the background doing jobs without having to be asked, Patrick would duly play his part on many a match day, having the team jerseys ready, lining out the pitch and if needed he would take up the job as umpire or linesman. Patrick's other sport was athletics and had great success in Cross Country races, Patrick was one of the founding members of St Brendan’s Athletics Club and held the title of Club President, he was inducted into the Kerry Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018.

Communities and clubs wouldn’t exist without people like Mike, Gráinne and Patrick who were sadly taken from us too soon especially when they had so much more to give but we remember them and thank them for making our parish a better place. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a n-anamacha.
