The Aphasia New Music Group unites people with language difficulties, professional musicians, and speech and language therapists. We write and perform new music together, growing in confidence and making new connections.
The project is run by Oedipa (a registered charitable organisation, no. 1171656) and the UCL Communication Clinic. We make all decisions as a group.
Since January 2023, we have put on concerts, taken workshops around the country, and carried out research into our work. Our music is totally original and based on the ideas, feelings and experiences of our members. We feel it is important to spread awareness of aphasia, because not many people have heard of it. Aphasia is a condition which affects the ability to use language, but it does not affect intelligence. The most common cause of aphasia is stroke.
We believe music making is good for everyone. For people living with aphasia, it can have a positive impact on communication skills, social networks, quality of life and wellbeing. We also hope our music is enjoyable and inspiring to others.
We are raising money to continue running the project in 2026. All donations will be used exclusively for the Aphasia New Music Group, and we are required by law to make sure this is the case.
Your donations will go towards:
- venue hire for the group to meet and perform throughout 2026
- train travel for members when we go on tour in the UK in spring 2026
- facilitator fees for professional musicians to come in and work with the group
- insurance to cover our activity and equipment so we keep everyone and everything safe
- accounting to make sure we comply with the rules set by the Charity Commission
