Anela's Story:

This poor girl was shot in the head at point-blank range and left to die. Through her amazing strength and bravery, she survived the bullet to her head. A caring visitor called the officers who had a big part in saving her life. Anela was brought to KHS and transferred to KSPCA immediately, rushed to the local clinic where she received lifesaving EMG care. She was in EMG care for two long weeks.

Her doctor discovered that the bullet had entered through her skull, traveled through the hard palate and tongue, then shattered the mandible (lower jaw bone) before exiting below her jaw. Anela was unable to use her tongue or jaw so a feeding tube was placed.

With the exceptional care of her vet and the clinic staff, Anela slowly started to respond to supportive care and even started to wag her tail and enjoy affection. It’s truly a miracle that she survived such an act of cruelty. After two long weeks in critical care at the clinic, she was released into a loving foster home where they continued her tube feeding and care until she was strong enough to undergo surgery.

An orthopedic surgeon was brought to Kauai from Oahu to perform her jaw reconstructive surgery. Anela is currently in a loving foster home where she continues to be fed with a feeding tube and gets stronger and happier every day.

Anela is worth every penny, but her medical bills have been astronomical and it has put a strain on our budget. Kauai SPCA is a non-profit that provides a second chance for Kauai animals facing homelessness or euthanasia due to age, medical or financial issues.
