At the end of September, my sister’s family suffered an unthinkable tragedy when a fire completely destroyed their home. In an instant, everything they owned was gone — their home, their belongings and their sense of safety.

Even more heartbreaking, her husband Mike passed away in the hospital. His death has left a hole that words cannot fill. He was a beloved husband, father and provider, and his absence is felt deeply.

Their daughter Michele, who is autistic and has special needs, was rescued from the fire but remains in the ICU in critical condition. She suffered severe smoke inhalation and still cannot breathe on her own. Doctors are doing everything they can, but her recovery is uncertain.

To make things even more devastating, the family did not have homeowners insurance. They have lost nearly everything — their home, their possessions, and now Mike.
