Launch date: January 31, 2019
UPDATE: May 8, 2019 - Great news!
I received a lease proposal from the SF Port property manager green lighting our project, with very fair terms.
We are now just waiting for the SF Port Commission's routine approval of the agreement at its next meeting.
Thanks to all of you who have contributed. We have raised enough money, through GoFundMe and other donations, to give the Port the requested $23,970.60 to enter into the lease.
Come celebrate at our barbeque/picnic/potluck on Saturday, May 25th, from noon to 5pm. Bay Natives/The New Farm, 10 Cargo Way, SF. Lots of music, chickens, goats, native plants, and children's activities.
Please know this GoFundMe campaign is ongoing, as we will have rent payments again later in the fall.
My name is Andy Pollack, and I was Director of Crossroads Community (The Farm) in the 1980s (Go to FoundSF.com to see video). I recently became President of Green City Project, Inc., a nonprofit with the mission of promoting ecological sustainability.
We now have the chance to reimagine the Farm and create a new community space with farm animals, native plants, food production, performing arts, visual arts, children's activities, and environmental education.
Your donation can make The New Farm a reality: a community space where children can experience a small-scale urban farm with goats, chickens, insect exhibitions, aquaponics, bicycle powered compost bins, vegetable and herb gardens, and fruit trees, amongst bike powered rides, a camera obscura, and maybe even some miniature golf holes. There is also room for a greenhouse/classroom and outdoor performances.
Green City Project will be working in conjunction with Bay Natives Nursery, a source of native plants for the Bay Area for over thirteen years. Bay Natives, and the site of The New Farm, is located at Pier 96, Port of SF, across from Heron's Head Park, in the Bayview. Together, we will promote the use of native plants, and create a new community/educational center.
