My name is Andriel Scharff, I am here today to ask for any support you are able to provide for my father.
My family resides in Spokane, WA and my father, Andrew Scharff, has worked for Waste Management for 25 years. Throughout that time he has been fortunate to avoid any accidents while on the job. He has seen great friends and colleagues who have lost their lives in this line of work. Many don’t consider the dangers of this profession but in a moments notice the action of others, weather and other elements beyond their control puts them at great risk.
On June 13th, I received a call from my mother that he had been in an accident. While scrambling to find out what happened, we feared the worst. We anxiously waited while information came through about someone having life threatening injuries and being unsure as to who is in critical condition, what happened and if my father would be ok. Another driver had struck his truck head on, putting him over a brick walled parking structure and multiple cars were involved. We waited anxiously and finally found that he had suffered broken ribs, a punctured and collapsed lung, a fractured neck, broken wrist amongst all of the other trauma and bruising.
For those of you who may not know, our family cares for two special needs individuals. My brother, Ramos, has been in love with Waste Management for many years. We would take long drives out to meet Dad and bring him lunch, the absolute joy on Ramos’ face when seeing Dad and his truck was the sweetest picture. Caring for someone with autism is not easy, and my mother and father have taken this on with pure love and grace. My sister, Becha, is also special needs and relies on my parents for support. My mother, years into remission, has also been in need of care after two battles with cancer. With my Dad being out of work for an undetermined amount of time this puts significant strain on the family and any support that can be given is truly appreciated. We are hoping for a swift recovery so my Dad can go back to doing what he loves.
Anyone who is on his route speaks about how he always helps out. He looks after the elderly individuals along his route, he strives to help those in need who are sick and disabled. He greets their children, waves to them daily, gives treats to the dogs and always brings a level of service that goes above and beyond the requirements of his job.
Thank you for your consideration and support, we are deeply grateful for the kindness that has been given to us all so far and feel overwhelmed by the love of the community in which I grew up in and my parents currently reside.
Sending all of our love - from your friendly neighborhood Garbage Man <3
