An orphanage for Gedong Pompa - fieldtrip #3

Who I am & why I’m collecting funds

My name is Alexandre Humbert. I’m a 26-year-old architect/engineer, recently graduated from Paris.
For the past two years, I’ve been working closely with residents of Kampung Gedong Pompa, a flood-prone neighborhood in North Jakarta, on the rebuilding of a community orphanage that was lost after repeated floods.

This project started as my master’s thesis but has since grown into a real, ongoing collaboration with the people who live there. I’m now raising funds to return to Jakarta and continue this work on site.

Why this project matters to me

The orphanage was originally built by the community itself after a major flood in 2007. It wasn’t just a building: it was a home for orphans, a place for learning, a gathering space, and a refuge during floods.

Since it disappeared, both the orphans and the wider community have lost an essential place to meet, learn, and stay safe.

Through workshops with residents, local associations, and universities, we have developed a shared vision for a new orphanage — one that responds to flooding, supports daily life, and helps create long-term opportunities for the children and the neighborhood.

For me, this project represents a different way of practicing architecture: slower, collective, and rooted in real human needs. I’m deeply committed to seeing it move from ideas to reality.

How the funds will be used

I aim to raise 15,000 DKK, which will allow me to return to Jakarta and focus on three concrete goals:

  • Finalize the design together with residents through on-site workshops

  • Find the right partners (engineers, organizations, and local actors) to make construction possible

  • Produce a short film where residents share their stories, to support further fundraising in Europe

The funds will cover:

  • Plane tickets (7000 dkk)

  • Local accommodation and basic living expenses (6000 dkk)

  • Workshop materials and logistics (1000 dkk)

  • Small first actions on site to keep the project moving forward (1000 dkk)

By supporting this campaign, you’re helping sustain a community-led project and giving space for another way of building — together.

Thank you for your support
