Amy's Legal Battle: 18 Months Without Her Son
Donation protected
I needed a printer for work and I'm excited to send Liam a series of postcards, each a story I wrote to go with the picture on the front

I’ve baked, sold, and scraped together everything I can—but I still need help affording a lawyer to fight for my family.
My name is Amy Leggett (Jurgensen), and I’m a devoted mom doing everything I can to rebuild a strong, stable life for my two sons—one a bright and sensitive 12-year-old, the other a curious and spirited 6-year-old.
In September 2023, I returned home to Pierre, South Dakota—where our extended family lives—so I could raise my children with the love, support, and stability they need. I’ve started over from scratch, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come. But right now, I need help.
Why I’m Asking for Support
I’m in the middle of a difficult interstate custody case. Despite my willingness to mediate or explore lower-cost options, the other party has refused to participate—leaving me no choice but to hire a new attorney and prepare for court.
Since the day after Thanksgiving 2023, I have not been allowed to see or privately speak with my older son. That’s over 18 months without contact—an ache I carry every day. I’m doing everything I can to stay strong and focused on what matters most: keeping both of my children safe, connected, and emotionally supported.
Up until now, I’ve been depending on free legal services while dealing with complex jurisdiction issues between Oregon and South Dakota. But it’s time to retain skilled legal representation who can advocate for the best interests of my children—and give us a real chance at healing and stability.
⚖️ Where the Funds Will Go
$15,000 – Retainer for a dedicated attorney
Up to $3,000 – Potential home study evaluation required by the court
$1000-2000 Travel to Oregon – For court appearances or legal requirements
I’m Doing Everything I Can
I want you to know—I’m not just waiting and hoping for help. I’m actively doing everything I can to raise funds:
I’m selling what I don’t need
I’m baking sourdough and desserts and selling them through my Facebook page, Debt-Free Dough
I’m exhausting what little credit I have left
I was completely committed to doing the hard work to stay married and keep our family together. But when I finally made the painful decision to file for divorce, the person I thought would always be my partner turned against me.
Despite that, I refuse to turn this into a story of blame. This is a story of love, resilience, and hope.
Why This Matters
Even with the support of my family, this has been the most isolating experience of my life. The legal system is overwhelming. The emotional toll of not seeing my son is indescribable. But I am still here. Still showing up. Still baking bread, selling what I can, and believing that the people around me—maybe even strangers—will care enough to help.
I’m not someone who asks for help lightly. But the truth is, I can’t do this part alone. Your support—whether through a donation or by sharing this campaign—gives me the chance to stand up in court with a capable advocate by my side and a real chance at reuniting with my son.
You’re not just helping with legal fees. You’re helping a mom fight for her children’s future. And that means everything.
With gratitude,
Amy
