I am so grateful to have been selected by my school to join an expedition to Vietnam in 2017, where girls my age can experience a very different culture to what we're used to in Australia.
Central to this three-week expedition will be our complete immersion a small rural community in North West Vietnam, where my team and I will assist children in the local school.
On a personal level, I believe this expedition will broaden my understanding of the world and help me to mature, both spiritually and intellectually. I believe independence and self-assurance are important qualities in every young person, and being placed in this environment will help me to achieve these things.
Helping those less fortunate than me is something I feel very deeply about and I believe this expedition will be a great foundation from which to get involved in future projects locally.
Beyond the more practical elements, I want to learn how to love more and develop a greater appreciation for the opportunities we have. I don’t want to walk around with my head in the clouds and take everything for granted like so many teenagers do. I want to give back more than I receive and demonstrate my gratitude for all the wonderful things in my life. I believe that through this expedition, I can deepen that part of me and spread it amongst others around me, too. That's one of the main goals that drove me to apply.
To me, the most important thing is compassion - to have a kind heart and to show concern for others around you.
I've always had a strong interest in leadership, even in primary school. I was house captain and class representative and also applied for school captain. I have also danced my whole life up until last year, which I believe is where the roots of my leadership aspirations come from.
I can assure you that I will bring great enthusiasm to this project as I am confident and love to maintain a positive mindset. I am certain that during this trip, the challenges will test our strengths, but I am willing to be there for everyone and help us all to push through and see the bigger picture.
In everything I do, I make sure I’m 100% passionate and committed. I can assure you that those qualities will be brought to the table for this worthwhile exercise.
All of the money raised for this trip will go directly to the fixed cost of taking part, which is $6,590. Rather than impose this cost on my parents (who already contribute significant sums to other charities both locally and abroad), I want to appeal to the people in the community to help me make this a reality.
I promise to make you proud of me. Please help me if you can.
