At the Amsterdam Gay Men’s Chorus we want to do everything possible to support LGBTQ+ visibility, diversity and education through singing and dancing. By fundraising for a documentary to be shown in schools, we want to bring our powerful stories to the classroom to support a safer, more accepting climate for young LGBTQ+ people.

Singer Kenneth explains: “In our last winter show, Welcome to the Family! our singers and dancers shared their personal stories live on stage. The audience was visibly moved, and Jaap and Nicky’s stories, in particular, really hit home for me.

As a primary school teacher, I see kids struggling every day—not just with their own feelings, but with the attitudes of the world around them. Unfortunately name-calling and exclusion are still common in today’s world, yet educational resources to tackle this subject are still really lacking.

Together with COC Nederland (a national LGBTQ+ advocacy group), we are developing lesson plans and workshops to help school teams reflect on and improve child safety, both in and out of the classroom. This is our way of giving back to our community.”

To get this off the ground, we’ve launched a crowdfunding campaign. We really hope that people from our community will help us out financially to make this beautiful and oh-so-necessary project a reality. The documentary will be produced in Dutch, to be shown in Dutch schools.

Bij het Amsterdam Gay Men’s Chorus willen we er alles aan doen om LHBTIQ+ zichtbaarheid, diversiteit en educatie te ondersteunen via zang en dans. Door geld in te zamelen voor een documentaire die op scholen vertoond zal worden, brengen we onze krachtige verhalen naar het klaslokaal. Zo dragen we bij aan een veiliger en toleranter klimaat voor jonge LHBTIQ+ personen.

Zanger Kenneth legt uit: “In onze laatste wintershow, Welcome to the Family!, deelden onze zangers en dansers hun persoonlijke verhalen live op het podium. Het publiek was zichtbaar geraakt, en vooral de verhalen van Jaap en Nicky kwamen echt bij me binnen. Als leraar in het basisonderwijs zie ik dagelijks kinderen worstelen—niet alleen met hun eigen gevoelens, maar ook met de houding van de wereld om hen heen. Helaas zijn uitschelden en buitensluiten nog steeds aan de orde van de dag, terwijl er nog altijd een groot gebrek is aan lesmateriaal om dit onderwerp aan te pakken.

Samen met COC Nederland ontwikkelen we lesbrieven en workshops om schoolteams te helpen reflecteren op de veiligheid van kinderen en deze te verbeteren, zowel binnen als buiten het klaslokaal. "Dit is onze manier om iets terug te doen voor onze community.”
