Hood AME Zion Church Beautification and Restoration Project, Oyster Bay, New York
Hello, my name is Christopher Chiu, and I am a Boy Scout from Troop 176 in Bayville, New York. I am dedicated to supporting the Hood African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Oyster Bay. In September 2019, I started to form my Eagle Scout project plan. The goal of this project is to help the Hood AME Zion Church in both beautifying the property and refurbishing the church to support black lives and communities of color.
The Hood AME Zion Church was founded in 1848. It serves as Oyster Bay’s oldest congregation continuously holding services in the same building. It is a historical site for the Underground Railroad, helping former slaves escape their captors, as well as a cemetery housing American Union Soldiers who helped retake the Southern Confederacy in the American Civil War. Historically, the Hood AME Zion Church has done many great deeds for our community and country.
This past winter, the church suffered great damage to their roof, resulting in a major leak. All excess funds will be directly donated to the church to help fix their leaking roof and refurbish their pews.
We hope that we will exceed the $500 goal to make sure that the Hood AME Zion Church receives the money needed for refurbishments! All donations will DIRECTLY go to the Hood AME Zion Church!
All support is welcome! Thank you!
