ALPENA STRONG - For Jon
On the heels of the destructive fire at Alpena’s beloved John A. Lau Saloon, community members and businesses have joined forces to launch a fundraiser to support Jon Benson.
Jon, who also owns J.J.’s Steakhouse and J.J.’s Catering & Rental, has served the Alpena community for more than 30 years. Jon purchased the iconic John A. Lau Saloon in 2018. Following extensive renovations, including a state-of-the-art kitchen, Jon reopened the doors to the 134-year-old historic building in the spring of 2019. A favorite among locals and tourists alike, John A. Lau was widely known for its historic charm and famous for its local ghost, Agnes Lau. The building was destroyed by a fire on the day before it was set to reopen following the COVID shutdown.
As word of the fire began to spread, so too did stories of Jon’s generosity in the community. He is recognized as a champion and leader in supporting many charitable causes. Jon is known for being humble, unassuming and never seeking recognition for the meaningful impact he has made for nonprofit organizations, youth activities, individuals and more.
Alpena Strong - For Jon - has been established to raise funds to provide disaster relief to support his businesses and employees during this difficult time.
Small businesses are already suffering due to the COVID-19 crisis. As a restaurant owner with a large catering business, Jon has had to pivot week after week during these uncertain times. He puts his team and his customers first while never wavering in his commitment to giving back and supporting our community. Jon's charitable efforts are as legendary and iconic as the John A. Lau building was in our downtown.
Now, it's our turn to give back to Jon.
