Help Us Honor Roger Casement — Irish LGBTQ+ Hero
The Rainbow Honor Walk, a 501(c)3 in San Francisco, in collaboration with the Consul General of Ireland, the United Irish Societies, Tourism Ireland, Casements Bar and Matthew Rothschild seek to honor Roger Casement with a 3’x3’ bronze plaque commemorating the extraordinary life and legacy of Roger Casement —an Irish patriot, humanitarian, and LGBTQ+ trailblazer.
The Rainbow Honor Walk has already installed 44 plaques in the sidewalks of the Castro District in San Francisco, celebrating the contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals across the globe. This year, the RHW Board voted to honor Roger Casement, making him the second Irishman to be included in the Walk, alongside Oscar Wilde.
Casement is widely recognized for his fearless exposure of colonial atrocities in the Congo and Peru while serving as a British diplomat. His landmark reports shocked the world and helped galvanize early 20th-century human rights efforts. After resigning from the British civil service in 1913, Casement devoted himself to the cause of Irish independence. He was arrested for his role in the 1916 Easter Rising and was executed by the British government—his legacy both martyred and maligned because he was gay.
The Rainbow Honor Walk is raising $10,000 to fund the creation, shipping, and installation of a bronze plaque honoring Roger Casement. This tribute, bearing his likeness, will be permanently placed in the heart of San Francisco’s Castro District—where his courage, truth-telling, and fight for justice will shine as a beacon to all who walk these streets. His story deserves to be seen, remembered, and celebrated.
