Miss Mary—affectionately known as “Mother Marian” or “Miss Mary the Midwife”—was a pillar of compassion, strength, and wisdom in her small community of White Hall, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, near Black River.
She was more than a mother and grandmother—she was a lifesaver. A self-taught midwife and herbal healer, Miss Mary helped deliver her eleven children, many of her grandchildren, and countless babies from her village. With only her hands, her faith, and her deep knowledge of nature’s medicine, she healed wounds, restored health, and offered comfort to all who came to her door.
People traveled from miles away to seek her herbal remedies and kind advice. Her gift was not only in healing the body but also in restoring hope in those who felt forgotten.
Miss Mary’s home was more than a place of rest—it was a community sanctuary.
