Alicia's Nicaragua Volunteer Trip
As most of you who read this probably know, Alicia is my younger sister of 4 years. Even though she is younger, I look up to her in so many ways, for the outgoing, caring and kind person she has become...this trip also being one of those reasons. She has wanted to take a volunteer trip like this since she was 11 years old. Thankfully, Charles River Labs where she works has approved a 4 week sabbatical from January 13 - February 10, 2017. She is now able to fulfill her lifelong dream of helping others, in this case women and children in an underprivileged, underdeveloped area of the world.
This 4 week global health trip is through the Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children (FIMRC). The FIMRC exists to provide access to quality healthcare to children and families globally in the developing world through providing medical care, healthcare education and community outreach. The particular program she has been accepted in is Project Limon, the FIMRC site in Nicaragua. The project provides healthcare via a clinic with the only pediatrician and OB/GYN in the remote rural area. She would have the opportunity to serve hands-on in Pediatric Health, Women's Health, Diabetic Program, Los Pipitos Physical Therapy and a Prenatal Program. She will work directly with clinicians (either in the clinic or during home visits), taking medical histories, or providing lessons to educate patients, teachers or other healthcare workers to better serve the area's population and their health needs.
This trip not only serves as a purpose for her personal development, but also to extend community service to an undeserved population in Nicaragua. She has an exceptional love and gift for taking care of children and I know she will love helping children who really need it.
I know this trip means so much to her. Please take a moment to donate, even if it's just a small amount. The funds raised will help with airline costs, vaccine costs and living costs for 4 weeks away from home. I know she will appreciate each and every dollar, as she has asked for no gifts this Christmas, just that those who do wish to give a gift put money towards her trip.
Thank you, kindly! Much love,
Amber
