Alicia Murray was a warm, vibrant, hard working loving mother simply living her best life.
As a child, Alicia was separated from her birth mother and became part of the child welfare system at age 5. When she was ten, she was placed in Betty’s home by the New York City foster care system and later adopted.
As an adult, Alicia became a foster parent and opened her home to other children. Just as she found a home with Betty, Alicia’s son and daughter found a home with her. Her son was just recently legally adopted and her daughter’s case was to be finalized in court on September 23rd.
Tragically, just mere days before that date, Alicia experienced some medical complications while recovering from a head cold she couldn’t shake. She went to the hospital when her condition worsened and somehow, this vibrant 47 year old woman passed away.
Alicia leaves behind her two young children who are only five and six.
Her mother Betty will be stepping in to care for Alicia’s children, but Betty will need both help and support. The average cost of raising a child in NYC exceeds $32,000 per year, and raising two children to 17 could cost up to $832,000.
To support Alicia’s family, this GoFundMe page has been set up to help Betty care for Alicia’s children by the Adoptive and Foster Family Coalition of New York, the organization that both Betty and Alicia are employed with. Alicia was a cherished member of the Wendy’s Wonderful Kids® AGAPE team, serving as a Family Support Specialist since 2023 while Betty worked with the NYC AGAPE team.
Alicia brought warmth, dedication, and lived experience to her work. Alicia embodied the heart and spirit of family support. Her professional background in human services, psychology, child care, real estate, and cosmetology gave her a unique perspective, but it was her compassion and unwavering commitment to children and families that made her truly extraordinary. Her absence will be profoundly felt by her family, colleagues, and the countless families she touched through her work.
We are grateful for Alicia’s time with us and the lasting impact she made on our community. Please keep her loved ones in your thoughts during this difficult time.
We invite you to contribute to help.
