Projects Abroad Peru Medical Trip

Dear family and friends,
This summer I have an exciting opportunity to volunteer as a health care intern working with disadvantaged communities in Peru’s Sacred Valley. While living with a host family, I’ll be spending my days at a local hospital and small clinics in the area with other teenagers who share the same passion for travel and medicine as I do. I’ll be talking with patients and assisting with basic medical procedures, and I’ll also attend lectures by doctors and shadow them in various clinics as they interact with and treat patients.
The weeks I spend in Peru will be a complete immersion into another culture, exploring my chosen field of medicine in an economically-challenged region. As I look ahead to my senior year of high school and second year of college classes, I’m exploring different possibilities for further study in medical sciences. One of the best parts of this volunteer experience will be the chance to pick a department focus. While I’ll be able to visit different clinics---HIV/AIDS, neurology, an eye center---and get to know many different sides of the medical field, I’ll also get to pick one for further exploration and put a lot of my focus there.
This self-funded volunteer experience is made possible through Projects Abroad (www.projects-abroad.net), the 23-year-old program that is the world’s leading international volunteer organization. Though I’m working several jobs to help pay for transportation to Peru and other costs related to my stay there, I’m asking for support to make this dream possible. I know it will make me a more knowledgeable and experienced health-care provider in the long run.
My goal in medicine is to help people. I know I want to work with children and teenagers, especially, and give them the support they need while young so they can live healthy and productive lives. This trip is going to be an incredible experience and a great way to further my aspirations in the medical field.
