Alexandra Stein Report for 2nd Gen Reparations

Summary: The Alex Stein report on 3HO childhoods was a collaborative effort by 2nd gen and for 2nd gen. Dharam paid the $20K cost to create the report, and is inviting anyone that wishes to contribute to do so.

Last September a large group of 2nd Gen were trying to understand the reparations process and figure out how to strengthen their claim, especially if they were not represented by a law firm. Among other things, an "expert report" prepared by JLC for their claimants by an expert on cults, felt like something those without representation were missing from their claim to ensure the administrators understood the overall context of childhoods in 3HO. Alexandra Stein is the author of Terror, Love and Brainwashing, a book on cult-like groups, that several 2nd Gen had read and found helpful. When her name came up, Dharam wrote her through her website (https://www.alexandrastein.com/) and she responded she was willing to work with us.

Because of the extremely short timeline, Dharam agreed to cover the entire cost ($20,000) of the report up front to ensure it could be completed in time to be used, and because claimants would not realistically be able to contribute to the cost from the reparations funds they received until the following summer.

This report was provided directly to the IHRP administrators by Lynn Shiner on Nov 12 2022, to ensure it benefited all claimants, even if they did not include it in their claim. To be clear, there is no way to know for sure if this report had any effect at all on the amounts people received. In fact, after this report was produced communication from the administrators of the protocol seemed to indicate reports like this would not make a difference. That being said, the Olive Branch report merely glossed over the experiences of 2nd Gen and perhaps this report did make a difference. It also may have some value to people outside of reparations as a candid glimpse of what it was actually like for many kids growing up in 3HO.
