Ale'yah Lewis' Mutual Aid Fund

Ale’yah Lewis is a local Champaign-Urbana resident and a survivor of police brutality. A video of her near-death incident at the hands of Urbana PD was shared on Facebook without her consent, catapulting her into the center spotlight of local Champaign-Urbana debates, protests and news cycles.
Many people in the community donated to her legal fund. Please know this is extremely appreciated and needed. Your contributions helped Ale’yah secure and compensate a badass, Black lawyer from Chicago.
But now, we are at another turning point in sustaining support for Ale’yah. Being in the spotlight has created challenges when interviewing for jobs, it has cost her friendships, has funneled animosity and threats towards her and her social media platforms... The list goes on. Because of these reasons and more, it is THE COMMUNITY’S responsibility to take care of her, the person (and not simply objectify her name for social justice causes).
Her court case is still active and will be for the rest of the year, if not longer. She will not only need our support outside the courthouse, but directly and monetarily in this fund. She is currently without a home and with a partner and an 8 week old puppy that she would like to stay together with. Shelters are a last resort because of this, but especially in the middle of a pandemic. If you have any housing or job leads, please contact us.
This fund is made by local organizer, Meghan McDonald, with approval and in direct cooperation with Ale’yah. All funds will be used for Ale’yah’s survival - meaning most of it will go to housing, physical and mental health needs, groceries, puppy food, vet medical bills, etc.
