The Alarm Phone is a hotline for people in distress at sea; we do not carry out rescues, but we raise the alarm to support rescue operations. We receive calls from boats crossing the Mediterranean, the Aegean, the Atlantic and the Channel.
'Our main objective is to offer people in distress an additional option to make their SOS noticeable. The Alarm Phone documents the situation, informs authorities of distress cases, and publicly puts pressure of them to act. This way, we try to stand with the people on their journeys and prevent push- backs and other forms of human rights violations against refugees and migrants at sea.' Increasingly we are also contacted by people searching for their loved ones. We try to support families and friends of the missing to find the information they need.
There are Alarm Phone UK teams in London, Glasgow and Brighton. We need money to fund shift costs (tech equipment, phone credit, travel, food) and training costs that allow new Alarm Phone members and teams around the country to take on shifts.
