Akels Journey

Born at the Mater Mother’s Hospital January 24th 2017 Akel’s parent’s, Tim & Lyndsey already knew that Akel & their family would have a very hard fight on their hands. Akel was born with a congenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome & would require a number of open heart surgeries to keep him alive & healthy. Akel has spent 40% of his 4 short years on this earth in at the Queensland Children’s Hospital having operations, healing, then recovering. Akel’s last operation failed & he ended up with a mechanical valve which has made things even more costly for the family. He also needs to travel to the children’s hospital often when he is at home & not admitted for cardiology, paediatric, ophthalmology appointments & quite often even emergency situations. Akel is currently an inpatient at the Queensland Children’s Hospital Paediatric Intensive Care Unit(PICU) relying on life saving medical equipment to keep him stable & heathy until he is strong enough to do so on his own after his fourth & unexpected open heart surgery. Due to Akel needing so much time in hospital the family have struggled to find suitable work that are understanding to the families need to be able to be by his bedside around the clock whilst Akel is sick. For these reasons & also due to supporting their other 5 children, medical supplies for Akel’s regular INR tests & his medications, other related costs, as well as rent & other bills, it has left huge financial burden on this family. They are currently in desperate need of new transportation as Akel needs to be able to attend hospital & his appointments regularly in order for him to maintain his health & their current transport is not stable or safe. We are asking for your support for them to obtain a reliable & safe vehicle for Akel to be able to receive the best possible care he can & also a bit of financial relief while Akel is still required to be in hospital.
