Aid waste pickers in Ecuador because of COVID-19

How would you bring money home to your family if you made a living working on the streets all day and all of a sudden you are not allowed to leave your house due to the COVID-19 situation?

With their daily work in Ecuador and Latin America, rubbish-rifling recyclers play a key social, economic and environmental role for the community, recovering millions of waste that can be recycled and reused for the benefit of the planet and our habitat.

In the current health emergency and curfew imposed by the government of Ecuador, these self-employed workers cannot leave their homes and do their jobs at the risk of;  exposing their health, getting Covid-19, being fined or even going to prison. For this reason, Redes con Rostro Foundation    begins this campaign intending to create community-saving groups for their recycler’s associations in two of the most affected provinces of Ecuador: Manabí (Viejo Luchador, ReciclaCoaque) and Sucumbíos (Puerto Rico and Asesoral), made up of 68 families linked to recycling ‒ mostly women and community elders.


The community saving groups will be managed by their beneficiaries and have two purposes; in the short term, to serve as an emergency fund to alleviate the basic needs of the rubbish-rifling recyclers and their families, and, in the long term, to become a permanent fund from which recycler’s associations can use, to either undertake investments that improve their autonomy and working conditions, or to face future crises, disasters or catastrophes that might again threaten their livelihoods. This way, we will be strengthening good development practices that can be replicated by other associations and groups of self-employed workers.

¿Qué harías si te ganas la vida trabajando en la calle y de la noche a la mañana te dicen que debes permanecer por mucho, mucho tiempo encerrado en tu casa?

Con su trabajo diario en Ecuador y Latinomérica, las y los recicladores de base cumplen un rol social, económico y ambiental clave para la comunidad, al recuperar de la basura millones de desechos que pueden ser reciclados y reutilizados en beneficio del planeta y nuestro propio hábitat.

En el actual escenario de emergencia sanitaria y toques de queda, estos trabajadores autónomos no pueden salir a realizar su labor, a riesgo de exponer su salud, contraer el Covid-19, ser multados o incluso caer presos. Es por este motivo que Fundación Redes con Rostro  inicia esta campaña con la finalidad de crear cajas de ahorro comunitarias para sus asociaciones de reciclador@s aliadas en dos de las provincias más afectadas del Ecuador: Manabí (Viejo Luchador, ReciclaCoaque) y Sucumbíos (Puerto Rico y Asesoral), compuestas por 68 familias vinculadas al reciclaje ‒en su mayoría mujeres y miembros de la tercera edad ‒.


Las cajas, que serán administradas por sus propios beneficiari@s, tienen un doble propósito: a mediano plazo, servir como fondos de emergencia para paliar las necesidades básicas de los reciclador@s y sus familias, y, a largo plazo, constituirse en fondos permanentes a los cuales las respectivas asociaciones puedan recurrir, ya sea para emprender inversiones que mejoren su autonomía y condiciones laborales, o para hacer frente a futuras crisis, desastres o catástrofes que amenacen nuevamente sus medios de subsistencia. De esta forma estaremos instaurando buenas prácticas de desarrollo que podrán ser replicadas por otras asociaciones y colectivos de trabajadores autónomos.
