Last year, my wife and I were blessed with our first child, a strong and healthy boy. Although it has been simply amazing, having this new addition to our family, it was not a particularly easy road. My wife wanted to have a natural birth, so we hired a birth center and midwife (and doula) to help us with this pregnancy. My wife, due to age, was considered high risk and the was some pre-eclampsia in the family, so we were told that we should still continue going to OBGYN for evaluations, which we did. It was getting expensive, but insurance was covering most of the costs and we were doing fine. It is important to note that the Birth Center told us not to involve insurance until after the birth, and they said they would help us with the process, this way they could provide one large bill and less headache for them. As you might imagine, this caused us, the brand new parents a massive headache.
Short story is, we paid $6000 for the birth center, my wife had elevated blood pressure and was moved to a hospital, where after 3 days of agonizing labor and pre-eclampsia, she was taken in for an emergency c-section. Thankfully our son was a healthy 9lbs 4oz and my wife was on the mend. We didn't get to have the birth we wanted but neither of us were that upset. We were just happy that we were all okay and had our son.
For those keeping track, we had to pay for the birth center and midwife that we didn't even get to use, and we had to pay for the week long hospital visit, birth, and all the things to keep my wife alive. With our insurance, it is a battle that we are still fighting to this day. We have provided them with all the information about the Birth Center 3 times, and were told that the claims were approved 2 times, and have yet to see a dime from them. They told us the checks would be mailed out the next week or so, and that was 3 months ago. Feel like we are getting the run around, and that we were let down by our birth center and midwife, as well as our insurance. Our insurance has paid everything except the birth center, and claims show as approved. Of the $6000 we paid, we are supposed to get roughly $4000 back, and I fear that we will never see that money, which is very much needed. During my wife's pregnancy, powerlines caught our fence on fire in a wind storm, and just recently our roof suffered a significant leak. To fix all these issues, I will be down a large amount of money. All that we are asking for, is the $4000 that we are owed by our insurance company. That way more of these issues can become more manageable. Any help that we can get would be greatly appreciated. God bless you all and have a wonderful day.
