Hello, I’m a long-time friend and St. Bernard partner of Martin Glovers. Against his wishes, I’m posting a GoFundMe for him. He has so much pride and did not want me doing this, but as many of you know, he is a professional dog handler and due to his diagnosis of cancer, he will need surgery and time to recover. Here is a little post from him from Facebook describing what he is going through.
After much anticipation (not in a good way) and a series of consultations, I have finally received my surgery date. Let's just say the medical field is overwhelmed and the insurance industry is a joke. While it is further away than I initially hoped, the earliest date available to evict this blob is December 23rd, checking in at the ghastly hour of 5:30 a.m. My surgery will involve two surgeons: Dr. Cole and Dr. Kyle, one from Portland and the other from Eugene, which has prolonged the date a bit. They have tried to have it moved to a Portland hospital for an earlier date without success. So here I am.
Renal cell carcinoma (RCC), (kidney cancer) is a condition that is particularly insidious as the body often conceals symptoms until the disease has progressed significantly. This characteristic of RCC is why many individuals are diagnosed at advanced stages. Before the surgery, I will undergo one final MRI to ensure that the cancer has not metastasized to other areas of my body.
While spending the Christmas season in the hospital and recovering from surgery was not the plan I envisioned (I was supposed to be in Scotland and Ireland), I am grateful to finally have a date to chainsaw this 4" tumor out.
The only other operation I have ever had was to sew my finger back on that was cut off in a bar fight when I was 21. Imagine that...
Unfortunately, since I will be recouping from having a triangular zipper installed on my right side to remove it, this situation means that I will need to forgo trips to Palm Springs and the Rose City shows in January. My hope is to be back to some normalcy by late February, doing left-handed circles and picking up dog poo.
He is a prideful man that would never take the help. But let’s show him the outpouring of how many do love and support him through this scary and difficult time.
