Aid for Student's Lost Car After Heroic Act
Donation protected
UPDATE: We have reached our fundraising goal! Thank you so much for all your support. It means so much and is so very helpful for my student and her friend as they work to recover from experiencing this traumatic event. Thank you all so much!
This is a fundraiser on behalf of one of my students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Last Wednesday, she was driving and saw a woman jump out of a car in distress. The man driving turned the car on that woman and hit her twice. My student and her friend quickly acted, inviting the woman who had been hurt into their car. They attempted to drive to safety, but were quickly chased at high speeds and eventually crashed into by the man, causing their car to spin out onto a nearby lawn. After the crash, he approached their car and shot the woman they were attempting to help three times. He then shot himself. While the woman was still alive after she was shot, she later died. The man died as well.
This is one of the many news stories about it: https://www.ketv.com/article/lincoln-police-identify-woman-killed-domestic-disturbance/63975470
I'm creating this fundraiser to help my student who is only known publicly as a "good samaritan." We've talked and feel that it is best for her healing journey to remain relatively anonymous publicly, which is also why I'm setting up this fundraiser.
Because of her acts of kindness, she is currently without a car and without reimbursement for the cost of a rental. It is also unclear if his insurance will pay for anything regarding the accident as he intentionally caused it and no decisions will be made quickly because he is now deceased.
My student is a student--doesn't have a lot of financial resources and needs support regaining her transportation. She does not want to make money from this. She is only interested in the support that will help her restore what was damaged and lost financially. She has spoken with the victim's family and they have all agreed that any money that comes in from this fundraiser that goes above what her needs are for therapy, rental car reimbursement, getting into a new car (taxes, registration, etc.), and replacing items in the car that were damaged, they will collaboratively donate to the Friendship Home (https://friendshiphome.org/) in honor of the victim.
As you might imagine, my student and her friend have a long road of healing in front of them. But they are doing OK and will be so grateful for any donations that can help them through the financial difficulty of this situation.
Thank you!
