Providing a Lifeline for LGBTIQ Refugees Stranded in Sudan
Hello kind-hearted friends,
My name is Edgar, and about two weeks ago, I was contacted by a remarkable young man named Melvin, who, along with his friends, fled their home country Uganda to escape severe persecution because they identify as part of the LGBTIQ community. Ugandan president Museveni signed the anti-gay bill into law that calls for death penalty (https://abcnews.go.com/International/uganda-president-signs-anti-lgbtq-bill-law/story?id=99669794). They are now in a in Sudan, living in desperate conditions while awaiting approval for asylum in a safer country.
Their Harsh Reality
Every day is a struggle for Melvin and his other friends. Their basic human needs, such as food, clean water, and medical care, are extremely difficult to come by in the refugee camp. While I’ve done what I can to support them, the situation is simply too overwhelming for my assistance alone. They are still waiting for the Asylum interview approval providing a glimmer of hope—but the timeline remains uncertain. Until then, they face mounting challenges without a secure source of income or reliable resources.
Why Your Help Matters
LGBTIQ Persecution
Melvin and his friends left everything behind because living openly in their home country put them in constant danger. In Sudan, they still face stigma and isolation, but they are determined to hold onto hope until they can move somewhere safer.
Basic Needs and Medical Treatment
Together with the relentless environment of the refugee camp, the lack of essentials—food, hygiene products, and adequate medical care—puts their physical and emotional health at serious risk.
Human Dignity and Hope
Asylum seekers often wait months or even years for their applications to be processed. Melvin and his friends need immediate support to maintain a dignified life while they navigate a long, uncertain path to freedom.
How Your Donations Will Help
Food and Bedding: Ensuring that they do not go to sleep hungry or on the ground without basic bedding.
Medical Support: Covering clinic visits, medication, and any emergency treatments they might need.
Hygiene Essentials: Providing soap, toothpaste, sanitary supplies, and other vital items to prevent illness.
Other Daily Expenses: Helping them purchase safe drinking water and cover minimal transportation needs for vital appointments.
Why I’m Fundraising for Them
GoFundMe is an American platform, and a U.S. address is required to initiate a campaign. I’ve stepped in as their friend from the United States to ensure all donations go directly to Melvin and his friends. Every cent you give will be passed on to them for these urgent needs.
Be the Light They Need Right Now
Melvin’s optimism is inspiring—he truly believes that this is just a temporary storm before calmer days arrive. You can help make that hope a reality by donating any amount you can. Even the smallest contribution can bring them one step closer to safety, stability, and the freedom they dream of.
If you feel moved by their story, please consider sharing this fundraiser with your community. Spreading the word can make an immeasurable impact and remind them that they are not alone in their fight for a better life.
From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for reading, donating, and standing in solidarity with Melvin and his friends. Your kindness can help transform their darkest days into the beginnings of a brighter future.
With profound gratitude,
Edgar
