My name is Abi. Recently, I found myself in a highly unusual situation. In September 2025, I received a phone call from the Osceola County Sheriff's Department that my ex-husband, Darrell Powell, had been found unconscious in a Wawa bathroom in Orlando, Florida. They told me verbally that he had total amnesia. When I asked them what had caused this, they told me they thought it had been either a stroke or a brain aneurysm. In fact, the amnesia was so total that his memory was completely gone. He had walked onto the property prior to becoming unconscious, and when found, there was nothing on his person to identify him. He had no keys, cell phone, wallet, or ID. Just $45 in the pocket of his jeans. He entered the hospital as a John Doe. The police tried to use fingerprints to identify him. Since he had no criminal record, that didn't work. They then used facial recognition software to locate his PA driver's license in an online database. An online search then led them to me since both of his parents had passed away and he had no next of kin capable of helping. I began research right away to help in any way that I could.
After two months of hospitalization in Florida, Darrell was put on a bus from FL to MD. I picked him up there and drove him straight to Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, PA. There, they confirmed that a brain aneurysm existed; however, we were told since it wasn't bleeding, it was most likely not the cause of the amnesia. Darrell and I both met with a psychiatrist, and that doctor told me verbally that he did not feel it was related to mental health since Darrell's only previous diagnosis was anxiety. Every doctor at Holy Spirit told us that they do not know enough about the brain to tell us how this has happened or if his memory will return.
At this point, Darrell has lost his apartment. His car is about to be repossessed. His belongings are totally missing. I am planning a trip to Erie next week to see if I can retrieve any of his belongings. Darrell is living in a homeless shelter. How can you help? I am not a woman of means, so in order to help Darrell, I need help with gas money. I am currently driving back and forth to Carlisle several times a week. Darrell needs help with a little reprieve from his situation. He is trying to get into a group living situation that isn't a homeless shelter. Right now, he cannot work, and the cheapest situation that we were told of is around $550 a month. Also, Darrell is a rather tall gentleman, and I cannot purchase him clothing at a thrift store due to fit. He is 6'8" and around 165 pounds. I did buy him a starter wardrobe of approximately 3 days' worth of clothing. Can you please help me help Darrell? His needs will be ongoing for the foreseeable future.
