Aid Afghan newcomers to North Carolina

Friends of Ascend - Triangle (North Carolina) is raising money to support the resettlement of young female refugees from Afghanistan. These young women were employed by or participated in programs delivered in Afghanistan by Ascend Athletics. This U.S. non-profit gave young Afghan women the opportunity to climb mountains, develop self confidence and leadership skills, and receive much needed emotional and educational support. Since the Taliban arrived in Kabul in August, Ascend has been able to evacuate over one hundred people.
We are preparing applications to welcome up to ten of these girls to the North Carolina Triangle area. The new U.S. Sponsor Circles program enables US citizens to directly support Afghan refugee resettlement. In these 'circles,' at least five U.S. citizens come together to offer housing, transportation, education assistance, general assistance, and aid in navigating the U.S. immigration system and local refugee support programs. When applying for certification each circle must show that they have been able to raise $2275 per refugee. We are coordinating efforts to build and fund these circles.
Through this GoFundMe, your money will be used to directly support these girls and any immediate family members also coming to the US. Some are waiting at military bases in the US and are immediately eligible for sponsorship, but others remain at the US resettlement center in Abu Dhabi. Given we anticipate roughly 10 girls to be eligible to relocate in the Triangle, we have set the goal to raise at least $22,750 (the $2275 required funding basis x ten individuals). The first $2275 will go to support the resettlement of the first girl to arrive in the Triangle, the next $2275 to support the second, and so on. A wider goal is to be able to fundraise enough to support these girls for their first 6 months as they begin the process of settling into life in the United States.
If we receive fewer than the expected 10 girls in the Triangle, the extra money in the GoFundMe will be split evenly among the Ascend team members who have been resettled here. We will distribute these funds once we are sure no more girls are coming to the Triangle via Ascend.
The first of these girls may arrive soon (December or January), but for those who are in Abu Dhabi it may be a longer wait before we can get them into the U.S. When they do arrive we look forward to supporting them in their resettlement in the Triangle.
If no Ascend team members are able to resettle in the Triangle, money from this GoFundMe will be donated to Ascend Athletics for use in the resettlement of the 100+ team members and their families who were able to escape Afghanistan.
