Honoring Our Promises: A Call to Safety

As we reflect on the events of the past few years, it’s impossible to ignore the promises made to our Afghan allies who stood by the U.S. mission in Afghanistan. Thousands of men and women put their lives on the line to support our efforts, risking everything to help us in the fight for freedom, democracy, and peace. In return, we pledged to protect them and their families—our commitment to them should never waver.

I’m deeply grateful for their sacrifices. The safety of my team and many others would not have been possible without the dedication and courage of those who worked alongside us in Afghanistan. While we have been successful in bringing at least 40 of our families to refuge, we still have 4 more to go. Our team needs assistance in buying airline tickets and establishing support in the U.S. while they get settled on their feet and become contributing members of their new home.

A Personal Journey of Gratitude and Responsibility

During our time in Afghanistan, my team helped establish the host nation tracking capability amongst Afghan Special Operations. Our work helped save countless American and Afghan lives by ensuring the correct targets were identified and protected many more. In order to be successful, we required the help of Afghans committed to fighting for their country’s freedom and who were willing to risk everything. And I mean everything. Because of their work, Taliban forces immediately started hunting them and their families in an attempt to punish them by death. The team lived in safehouses, moving frequently, hiding, and communicating only at great peril.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of many organizations, advocates, and citizens, most of the team have managed to resettle in the U.S., finding a new home where they can rebuild their lives. These individuals have not only found safety, but they have also brought invaluable skills, knowledge, and experiences to our country. Many are now contributing to their communities, working in healthcare, education, and even law enforcement. Their resilience and strength inspire all of us.

The Need Continues

We must keep our promise. The world has witnessed our commitment to protecting those who helped us, but the job is not yet done. The longer these individuals and families remain in danger, the more we risk losing the very essence of the values we claim to uphold: freedom, justice, and loyalty to those who stand with us.
