When the 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Chipursan Valley, high in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region, it was not only houses that collapsed. In a matter of seconds, an entire community was pushed into uncertainty and displacement in the middle of winter.
Nearly 90% of the population, more than 4000 people, is now living in tents in -20 degrees, as aftershocks continue and temperatures plunge. Hundreds of homes built over generations are uninhabitable. Food and belongings remain buried under rubble.
When i met a young girl from Chipursan three years ago, long before the earthquake, i originally made a story about her progress in school, being the best in her class. Yesterday, she told me, “I’m scared all the time the earthquake will happen again. It’s so cold in the tents. If we stay here, I feel like we will die.”
Winter is turning this disaster into a race against time. This fundraiser is about keeping people alive, providing warmth, food, shelter, and medical support to a community waiting for safety and hope. Just ten euros can buy a heating system, or food for a week for a small family.
