Wij zijn Daniëlle en Evy uit Eindhoven en op 31 oktober stappen we in onze barrel (een Volkswagen Golf Ocean) om de Amsterdam Dakar Challenge te rijden.

In ongeveer drie weken tijd rijden we ruim 7.000 kilometer dwars door Europa en Afrika met als eindbestemming Dakar.

De Amsterdam Dakar Challenge is geen race maar een avontuurlijke roadtrip waarbij het vooral draait om improviseren en elkaar helpen om de finish te halen. Onderweg zullen we waarschijnlijk behoorlijk wat meemaken met onze bolide, die namelijk niet echt gemaakt is voor deze reis. Maar dat is juist het avontuur.

Echter rijden we niet alleen voor het avontuur maar ook voor het goede doel.

Na het behalen van de finish rijden we namelijk door naar Gambia waar onze Golf (inmiddels onze kleine huiskamer geworden) wordt geveild. De opbrengst hiervan gaat rechtstreeks naar lokale projecten voor scholing van kwetsbare meisjes en solarprojecten in Gambia.

Om onze barrel überhaupt aan de andere kant van de wereld te krijgen komt er natuurlijk ook het nodige bij kijken. Momenteel werken we eraan om de auto zo "woestijn proof" mogelijk te maken en moeten we veel meenemen aan bv. reserveonderdelen, kampeerspullen enz. En niet te vergeten: heel wat liters diesel.

We’re Daniëlle and Evy from Eindhoven, the Netherlands, and on October 31st we’ll be hitting the road in our trusty barrel (a Volkswagen Golf Ocean) to take part in the Amsterdam Dakar Challenge.

Over the course of roughly three weeks we’ll be driving more than 7,000 kilometres across Europe and Africa, with Dakar as our final destination.

The Amsterdam Dakar Challenge isn’t a race but an adventurous road trip where improvising, helping each other out and making it to the finish are what it’s all about. Along the way, we’ll probably get ourselves into quite a few situations with our little car, which isn’t exactly built for this kind of journey. But that’s all part of the adventure.

And we’re not just doing it for the adventure, we’re also driving for a good cause.

After reaching the finish line we’ll continue on to Gambia, where our Golf (by then basically our little home on wheels) will be auctioned off. The proceeds will go directly to local projects supporting education for vulnerable girls and solar projects in Gambia.

Of course, getting our barrel all the way to the other side of the world takes a bit of preparation. We’re currently working on making the car as “desert-proof” as possible, and we’ll need to bring plenty of spare parts, camping gear and other essentials. And, of course, quite a few litres of diesel.
