Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico on Wednesday, September 20, 2017. Many Puerto Ricans living outside of the island were left to wonder what happened to their family members as communications were completely wiped-out.

On Sunday, September 23, 2017 a group of Wake Forest, NC residents decided that tears and prayers did not mean much if action was not in place. Through social media a group of working families got to know each other and decided to join efforts to help the island, some of us still not knowing if our friends and family members were dead or alive. That is still the case for many Puerto Ricans, even inside the island.

We are not experts, we are not professional volunteers, we are regular people trying to help our beautiful but hurricane-ravished island. We cannot fathom that words like destruction and humanitarian crisis are associated with the Puerto Rico that we know and love.

With the outstanding help and support of the Wake Forest community, donations, drop-off locations volunteers, and businesses have agreed to help. We have received and continue to receive donations to help many families!

However, sending the items to the families of Puerto Rico is a challenge because of logistics. It is expensive and difficult, and many Puerto Ricans are not receiving the help that they need because of the slow distribution through govenment agencies which takes weeks before distribution. While this is a great and NEEDED effort by many volunteers, families need help NOW!

That is why we have decided to help one family at a time!
Through USPS whe have started to send flat rate boxes ($18.85) where we can fit up to 25 lbs of non-perishable food and other first necessity items.  We have sent over 100 boxes through "adoption" of boxes, but our hope is to send as many as possible. There are 3.5 million American citizens in Puerto Rico.

Our goal is to send 5,000 boxes and ALSO send a container to the Salesian Charities at the Maria Auxiliadora School, that is why we need to achieve our funding goal.  Here some of the work that they are doing for children and their families!

We will pay attention to the need to recalibrate our efforts as necessary. Please help us help Puerto Rico ONE BOX AT A TIME!

Thank you!
