Save the Heritage Centre
On the 25th of May we reported that the Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre might be closing for good on 1st June 2025 unless a miracle occurred. Since then, part of the miracle has occurred and thanks to all of you we have hit our first target and raised enough money pay the lease for 12 months.
However, the long term future of the Heritage Centre is still at risk and the only way to secure that future is to try and raise the funds needed to purchase the freehold. Please donate and spread the word to help us to protect and preserve this unique piece of Liverpool's heritage.
The Centre has been operating on a peppercorn-lease for 25 years but following the failed sale of the freehold a firm of property receivers are now in control of the site. They have offered the Society a new lease but are proposing a commercial rent (£20,000) that is beyond the Society's means to pay. They have also offered to sell us the freehold but the asking price (£275,000) is also way out of our reach.
Through it's work at the Heritage Centre, the Joseph Williamson Society is dedicated to preserving the subterranean legacy left by 19th century philanthropist, Joseph Williamson
