BUILDING A HOLISTIC CENTRE IN HIMALAYAN FOOTHILLS, INDIA

We are Lieke and Karan, nice to meet you. We love to introduce ourselves and Adara to you.

BACKGROUND KARAN & LIEKE

Karan (India) and Lieke (Netherlands) met 7 years ago, and found the desire to start a community project. The merging of different cultures shows that we can create a world as one family, where uniqueness is celebrated, but at the same time differences are disappearing. Of course, we've had our own lessons and challenges with this. To raise into this higher love takes time and commitment.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Adara is a holistic centre with multiple programs that benefit the local community, and beyond.

The house we use as base for Adara, is where Karan grew up. It is located at the edge of a town (Pauri) 3.5 hours drive from Rishikesh, along the Ganga and into the Himalayan foothills.

In the Indian mountains, many people seek a better life in the materialistic way. There is a lot of poverty and unemployment, with little chances for youth to develop and be exposed. The focus is on securing basic life standards. This is so understandable and needed. But in such conditions of fear and shortage, the area lacks inspiration for a simple yet abundant lifestyle. Where consciousness and joy lead the way. Where things are possible. Where youth gets a chance to learn through experience instead of passive rehearsal.

At our farmstay (a homestay with a small farm) we accommodate people in a homely way. It is for anyone seeking a genuine and authentic experience. Travellers from India and abroad come to rest, rejuvenate and live in a simple, conscious and sustainable way with us.

But our project is more than that. The farmstay mostly support us to be (financially) self-sustaining. So that we can run other awareness programs for locals and internationals, and make this world beautiful and bright. Our programs are mainly focused around: organic farming and eco-diversity and alternative education for underprivileged children. We also aim in near future to serve women, empowering them through job offerings and training, and raising awareness in the local area around waste management.

We've experienced a lot of benefits from children and volunteers engaging with each other, and would love to continue this. In such a remote area, it is very special that children are exposed to new cultures, people and ideas. They learn how to express themselves and feel confident, while being provided a safe space where they are loved, and where they can play and be themselves. There is a lot of joy in these interactions! The children do need some structure and consistency, and we see the need for 1-2 permanent local teachers.

The most important thing throughout all activities, is to embody love in the ways we are. To inspire people that abundant and simple life is possible for everyone. Adara, as such, is a model for conscious living.
