VETERANS - ADAPT GATEWAY a Non-Profit Organisation

Donation protected
ADAPT Gateway is in urgent need of funds to help run peer support groups, for veterans. Veterans are struggling with their health and wellbeing, from a physical and mental perspective. In large part, this is linked to isolation as a result of government guidance around the need for vulnerable individuals to socially distance since the emergence of COVID.

ADAPT Gateway UK Ltd (A-G) is a non-profit organisation soon to become a charity that has a mission to support, train and educate veterans, leading to more fulfilled lives. Drawing on considerable insight and knowledge from the lived experience, peers will help change the perspectives of veterans with disabilities to realise their full personal and societal potential. Our members have a wealth of complementary knowledge and varied experiences, for details, please see: www.adaptgateway.org

Geographically, ADAPT Gateway is located in Wales UK and run by veterans and individuals with disabilities, who have considerable lived experiences. Our initial work will focus veterans with mental and physical health challenges:

Distinct participant sub-groups (e.g., limbless veterans and veterans with PTSD) will engage in tailored programmes of peer-to-peer support. Initial sessions will be facilitated by peer support workers as well as highly experienced, subject-specific consultants. Following an initial 8 weeks of confidential closed-group support, participants will transition to continued support using an open-group format.

Different challenges exist for sub-groups. For example, military veterans with complex physical and mental health challenges struggle to reintegrate into a community setting – resulting in a downward spiral of wellbeing. These symptoms can often stem from a lack of trust in others and a crisis of confidence, leading to chronic isolation and reduced physical activity. To help individuals break negative characteristics, acceptance of existing behaviours and subsequent change is necessary. While a considerable number of military veterans’ charities exist, findings from recent research we have conducted confirm the need for a more strategic approach to address these issues, where inter-service and charity collaboration is necessary. ADAPT Gateway will help review and facilitate changes relating to existing support content, strategies and policies.

The principle design of our provision is unique and anticipated outcomes of peer-to-peer support include:

• Improved social interaction and reduced isolation;

• Shared knowledge and experiences

• The development of new coping strategies

• The prevention of secondary impairments (e.g., depression and pressure ulcers); and

• Improved knowledge about available benefits and the use of direct payments.

We are sincerely grateful for your support.
