Activist Recovering from Financial Ruin

Hi ya'll! My name is Hannah and I'm fundraising to cover a massive car repair bill and help achieve housing security. You may know me through my passion for human rights activism, my work in drug policy reform, or my commitments to community-based harm reduction and overdose prevention & response. Please, donate to help me on my journey to continue this work!

My trusty Subaru Outback (Red Rhonda) has helped me bring harm reduction resources like narcan to so many, traveling thousands of miles to events all over the Deep South region which is deeply under-resourced! From Appalachia to Alabama, Red Rhonda has kept me and countless others safe on our mission to care for our community. She’s suffered a head gasket blow and repairs cost over 5k! Unfortunately, when it rains… it pours!

I have also ended up in housing insecurity and financial ruin due to experiencing labor exploitation with a national nonprofit organization. After two years of contract-based labor, they told me I’d be brought on as a full-time employee and receive a salary by a certain date. They supported my search for housing, saying they wanted to help in whatever ways they could. Once they disclosed the starting salary and benefits package, I signed a lease that would have been ⅓ of my monthly salaried income. One month after moving into my house the organization told me I wouldn’t get the salary or full-time hours after all, saying it was because the Board of Directors didn’t approve the decision. I found out months later they lied to avoid taking accountability for their own decision-making and the impact which placed me in financial insecurity.
I consequently went into debt in my attempts to avoid breaking my lease or being evicted. During this time I continued to provide free unpaid labor outside my contract as a “volunteer” representing the organization at many large events and local events, going above and beyond to forge relationships for the org. Two of my favorite major music artists were inspired by my passion for harm reduction and as a result they invited the organization to join their 2 headlining tours across the U.S. A few months later I was wrongfully fired and told I was never allowed to volunteer again or be associated with the organization which I poured my heart into for years. Despite forging relationships with major artists on their behalf, and despite having the courage to accept a last minute invitation to stand on a stage and urge thousands of people to support the organization’s mission, I was fired for “lack of deliverables”.

My undergrad specialization in social movement theory and strategic organizing as well as my 13 years of experience in human rights activism is how I know in my heart and mind that I have been deeply harmed. Power-based violence and organizational harm eventually comes to the surface to be seen for what it is.

Please help me restore housing and financial security! After paying Red Rhonda’s repairs bill, I will be using these funds to cover the security deposit as well as the first and last month's rent required to move into cheaper housing that is actually affordable under my income at this time. Any amount of kind words, love, support, or funds you’re able to offer to aid my recovery is deeply meaningful. If all you have is love, send it my way and know I’m so grateful to be receiving your love!

I’ll leave you all on a positive note and share that I’m returning to local and community based organizing after 6 years of federal and state policy reform work, and it feels amazing. Everyday I get to support individuals in my community who need love, kindness, and resources. I get PAID to teach overdose prevention and response, distribute Naloxone/Narcan, operate a syringe service program (SSP), and reduce the harm associated with substance use. Cheers to change and transformation, to healing, to forever being a harm reduction hottie. Thank you all for your support <3
