Founded in 2022, the Accra Literacy Campaign was created to support the educational furtherance of children and young people across Ghana. As a dynamic communal campaign, it prioritizes children and young people between the ages of 4 and 18 from a holistic approach. According to their most recent census report, the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) reports that approximately Ghanaians ages 6 and above are unable to “read and write with understanding”. Of them, “4.6 million” are female and “3.3 million” are male. UNICEF records that “400,000” children of “pre-primary education” and “623,500” children of the primary school level are not enrolled in school in Ghana. It also notes that “adolescent girls are usually unable to get an education due to factors such as poverty, gender inequality and long distances from school”.
By partnering with like-minded Ghanaian-based organizations that are engaged in similar meaningful work, ALC focuses on literacy, period poverty, scholarship funding and providing supplemental needs. We partner with local community-organizing leaders not only because we prioritize co-creation but also because we deeply value their knowledge on all levels as far as the work is concerned.
Please note funds will be allocated to campaign execution for an anticipated 4-year period.
