Accessible Waters Start-up and Operations
Accessible Waters aims to support those with disabilities, physical or mobility limitations to engage in boating recreation on Alberta’s lakes and rivers.
We are a family-run non-profit in Alberta, with the vision of supporting those with mobility, physical or sensory limitations in accessing Alberta’s lakes and rivers. We recognize there are often many barriers preventing those with disability or other physical limitations from enjoying and participating in activities on the water. Our goal is to reduce these barriers with a fully modified and accessible boat and to advocate for improved land-to-water facilities to make Alberta’s waterways inclusive and accessible to all. Our customers will benefit from having improved access to our natural environments with the ability to fully participate in water-based activities with family and friends.
For ease of access, our retrofitted boat The Rum Runner II has a standard sized ramp, fitted with grab bars, for entry onto boat either by foot or with mobility aids. In the boat, we have seating for a full family with safety connectors for wheelchairs.
We are looking to raise $27, 000 CAD for our ongoing project costs, trip sponsoring, and operations. These funds will go towards upgrading, equipment costs, expanding our reach and enable us to offer low pricing to those seeking our service. As a non-profit supporting those with differing abilities, we want to keep our service rates affordable to individuals so this service is not only physically accessible but also financially accessible.
