The past 9 months have been a whirlwind for my sister and brother-in-law.
Since sweet Lily Grace was born they have been uprooted. They have been living at the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) during Lily’s time at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and again now, while Lily is at St. Mary’s Children's Hospital in Queens.
Lily was born with gastroschisis, a condition in which a baby's intestines remain on the outside of the body during development in the womb. Lily had surgery right after she was born to put her intestines back inside. However, it takes time for a little body to adjust to these changes, so she needed a feeding tube to help her get nutrients. Lily has made many strides these past 9 months, including coming home (with a feeding tube) in February! :) Lily now requires a feeding therapy program to help her learn to bottle feed and eat. She will stay at St. Mary's until doctors decide she's ready to come home again.
As anyone can imagine, this is a strain on my sister and brother-in-law's emotions and finances. It is exhausting for them to switch off spending days and nights in the hospital, fighting for the best care for Lily. It’s also very difficult to be away from Liam, their adorable 22 month old. To make matters worse, my sister has food allergies that are difficult to accommodate when you’re away from home. Since she’s a nursing mother, proper nutrition is key!
Our family is so very grateful for all of the care Lily has gotten so far and for RMH for giving them a safe and convenient place to lay their heads each night. Unfortunately, we don't know how long this stay will be.
I’m putting this fundraiser together because so many kind friends and neighbors have asked what they can do to help them through this difficult time. I honestly don’t know, but I’m certain they could put any donations toward the many expenses they have right now (bills, Ronald McDonald House, finding gluten free food, gas to and from the hospital, etc).
