Hi, my name is Abel. I am writing this from a refugee camp in Africa where I have been living in limbo and in fear simply for being who I am, a proud gay man.

In my home country, my life was in danger every single day because of my sexual orientation. I faced persecution, threats, and violence, forcing me to flee everything I knew in search of safety. I arrived at this camp hoping for refuge, but for LGBTQ+ people, camps can be just as dangerous. I live in constant fear of being targeted, and I have to hide my true self to survive. The dream of a life where I can live openly, without fear, feels very far away. But now, I have a real chance for that life.

Canada has accepted me as an LGBTQ+ refugee, and I am in the process of resettling. This is a miracle for me, a chance to finally be safe, to work, to contribute, and to live with dignity. However, the journey is not over. I need your help to cross the finish line. Arriving in a new country with nothing is incredibly difficult. The Canadian government offers support, but I will need to build my life from scratch. The funds raised through this campaign will be a lifeline, allowing me to meet my most basic needs as I take my first steps toward freedom. I am not asking for a handout, but for a hand up. I am eager to work hard, to learn, and to become a positive member of my new community in Canada.
