Dear community,
The Abayudaya / Putti Jewish Community of Uganda is seeking our support. They are aspiring to acquire land and transform it a crop farm that will generate income for the community. They need our help to raise funds to make it happen! Our goal is to raise UGX 27,480,000 (US: ~$7,500), all of which will go toward financing this farming project. It will be used to construct facilities, purchase equipment, and fund operating expenses.
As soon as the funds are secured, the project can finally begin. Please read below for all of the details of this project. We hope to receive the funds as soon as possible. Anything you can contribute will be greatly appreciated, a little goes a long way!
Here is a message from Moshe Madoi Yashiirah, of the Putti Jewish Community of Uganda:
Crop farming play a critical role in increasing production. It is said that a seed is an essential, strategic, and relatively inexpensive input that often determines the upper limit of crop yields the productivity of all other agricultural inputs.
Due to climate change, we are seeing a decrease in soil fertility, higher frequency of drought and longer mid seasons. This is causing significant food insecurity in different regions of the country. As a result, we hope to grow our own high quality food and manage a farm here ourselves.
Agriculture has for several years formed the backbone of Uganda's economy, contributing approximately 37% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Yet it employs about 80% of the Ugandan population. It is the most convenient sector for income generation. It is one sector that almost all Ugandans are fairly knowledgeable.
Agriculture is sector that we are comfortable operating, and we believe it will be successful and self sustaining in the long run. We intend to venture into growing crops like bananas, tomatoes, Maize, beans; and animals such as goats and cattle as well as fowls like chicken.
Mission Statement:
We intend to establish the farm to contribute to our wellbeing and to the community in general. The farm is an opportunity for employment to our Jewish brothers, sisters, and to the neighboring community.
The products of the project are needed in the local community market as well as other markets. We expect to expand the project to serve a wider market in the long run. Also we will assist other orthodox Jewish community members to grow and establish themselves by sharing with them our learnings and resources.
Goals of the farm:
-To acquire at least 3 acres of land in the first year of operation
-To establish at least 1 acre of banana plantation, 1 acre of beans and Maize.
-Acquire and rear at least 10 goats, 5 cattle, and 1000 chicken.
-Construction of a farm house.
Farm Strategy
We are going to establish a mixed farm where we grow both crops and rear animals and fowls. We shall start with a banana plantation, beans and maize in the short run but we expect to grow other crops as we expand in the long run. We believe we will have up to 10 acres of crops in five years after we have started animals on a minimum of 5 acres.
Why banana?
Bananas are consumed in Uganda in various forms; mostly as cooked, roasted, dessert, brew, and juice. The demand for the cooking types is increasing rapidly in the urban areas due to rural-urban migration and changing consumer preferences. Cooking banana is the main staple crop in Uganda, produced mostly by smallholders for food and income.
Most of the bananas consumed in Uganda mainly come from the western part of the country, which is more than 250km from the center of Mbale City. Due the transport costs involved in transporting the bananas from western Uganda, banana retail prices in Mbale- Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso are normally higher than they are in western Uganda. Growing bananas in Mbale districts reduces the transport costs to the market in Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso, hence lower banana retail prices. This will lead to more sales and easy access to more affordable food by the neighboring communities.
Location:
The farm is expected to be located either in Mbale or Budaka districts depending on where we will acquire the land for farming, with the possibility of expansion. We have done some scouting and we have established that the most suitable villages for the farm are Putti, in Budaka district or Kamonkoli in Mbale district.
Marketing Strategy and Plan:
We shall first market our products in the local markets where our farm will be situated. Any extra products not consumed by the local communities will then be marketed in the neighboring communities and then to other wider areas as we expand our production.
Management Summary:
This will be a sole business. We will have an overall manager to supervise and oversee business. There will also be a financial manager to handle to all books, as well as a secretary who will be in charge of the records. Finally, there will be the field officer who will be head of all the workers and hired labour.
In addition, we will have assistance from the district's agricultural technical person and other experienced people in crop and livestock agriculture. We will also have help from many community members in the running of the daily activity at the farm.
Funding required:
As stated above, the project is seeking to raise UGX 27,480,000 (US: ~$7,500). This money will go toward financing this farming project. It will be use to construct facilities, purchase equipment, and fund operating expenses.
As soon as the funds are secured, the project can begin. We hope to receive the funds as soon as possible.
Thank you so much for any financial support you are able to provide! We are so grateful.
With care,
Moshe and the Abayudaya / Putti Jewish community
This gofundme is being organized by Adi Aboody & Ophir Haberer, based in Oakland, California- friends of Moshe and the Abayudaya / Putti community.
