Hello, friends.
It's scary to put something this private out there, but here we go...
After a lot of thought and consideration, Raquel and I have decided to start a family! We are very excited, but as you might imagine, it's a little complicated for folks like us. We are open to adoption, but would like to try to experience carrying a child. We have a whole lot of love for each other but are lacking resources required to do this on our own. After a lot of consideration of available options, the best choice for our family is to use a sperm donor and the IUI procedure.
Eventually, (depending on a lot of things!) we hope to be able to each carry one baby using the same donor so our children would be biologically related to each other.
Our friends suggested starting a GoFundMe to help us offset the following costs of the procedures and donations, which are not covered by our insurance . These fees are PER CYCLE, which means EACH TIME we try to get pregnant, we will incur these costs. It can take an average of 4 tries to get pregnant, with a 20% chance of success each time.
$250: Fee to ship to our fertility clinic.
$550-$840 : per vial of sperm.
$475: IUI procedure cost each time. *Our insurance will help off-set only 6 attempts, though we still incur co-pays per office visit.*
Additionally storage of sperm at the fertility center until if/when we try for a second child: 474/year for up to 12 vials.
We know this process is unfamiliar to a lot of people, and we are open to answering questions because it's a whole new world we have had to learn about; we are happy to share what we've discovered.
We understand the responsibility we are undertaking (as much as you can before you experience parenthood, anyway!) and will make it happen on our own eventually. We can afford to raise a child, but as a crew member at Trader Joes and a behavior analyst at a therapeutic clinic for children with special needs, our compensation does not necessarily match the value of our services. We are also both working on paying student loans while managing city living in Chicago.
Kelly is working to obtain her personal trainer certification to create additional income, and and Raquel is growing her skill set to learn to manage her own side business ventures. We are open to other side job opportunities if you are able to help in that way.
Friends have encouraged us to see if our loving community would like to help offset some of the costs involved, and we would appreciate literally ANYTHING you may be able to give, and that includes emotional support, positive thoughts, and encouragement! Our child(ren) will likely face unique challenges having two moms, and knowing they will have a chosen family rooting for them means the world to us.
We will do our best to raise independent, kind, compassionate children who contribute to society. Also, you will be welcome to baby updates along the way. :)
We appreciate your consideration, generosity, and support as we take this leap.
Much love,
Kelly and Raquel Dues
