After living in their home for over 40 years, the Taylors must leave their home in 30 days due to failure to pay their property taxes on time back in 2009 and failure to pay the 14,000 lean on the property. The Taylor’s are in their 80s. In order to stay in their home for 30 days, they had to get a loan for 7,378 dollars. We are trying to repay the loan and raise enough money for moving expenses.
In 2009, Corey's dad paid his taxes a month late. Because he paid a month late, a 14,000 lien was put on the house. (1% of the value). Then it was auctioned and sold to a buyer. In order to keep the house they have to get a loan for 180,000 and pay the new owner back. (House has been paid off for years). Their credit is awful and they are retired. The other option, which is the only one we can afford, is to pay the new owner 7,378 for a 30 month delay on them moving out. So we are paying 7,378.00 to keep them in one more month. We paid the new owner and now need to raise the money to pay back the money we borrowed. We need the 30 days to get a storage facility and a new location for them to live on a retired teacher salary. Mr. and Mrs. Taylor are elderly and do not understand all that is happening. Being late a month on 786.00 in taxes one year caused this situation to spiral out of control and boom. It is heartbreaking to me but with your prayers hopefully a silver lining will come. This a done deal, but we are trying to make the best of it.
UPDATE: Seems now that we are researching this further, it has been going on for a few years. Corey's daddy was served and also had chances to appeal. I think his age and memory affected his clear judgment in this case. The situation was unknown to us or we could have acted sooner. I am sorry to say it looks like legally everything was by the books. The victim here is a couple in their 80s who are frail of health and memory and did not know enough about the process to act.
Mr. and Mrs. Taylor are both retired teachers and administrators in lafayette parish. They are in their late 70s and early 80s. Corey’s Dad is former military. After building their house by hand and living there their whole life, this house is taken away. He has paid his taxes on the house every year. One year was missed for 787.00. This was 6 years ago. The bank sold the lien to other banks which took over their parents house.
