Jacob’s Journey

All donations will go directly to the family for help with living costs while their young son receives treatment for cancer.

Hi, my name is Charlotte and I’m no stranger to fundraising. This time, our nephew and his parents need our support. I am going to walk the length of a marathon on February 8th to raise money for the family’s living costs while their little boy is in hospital waiting to receive further treatment for cancer. My aim initially was to raise enough to pay 2 months worth of rent to take some of the stress away from them. The generosity of the community means we can do even more to help. Please read their story below, written by Jacob’s mum, Lucy. Thank you.

“So I’ve had lots of messages regarding Jacob, and we are now at a point where I can share information with you all.
Bit of a long post, but here goes….
Jacob was poorly over Christmas. We had a couple of trips to the Doctor and were told it was a viral infection and a tummy bug. We also had two visits to out of ours where the second time he was given antibiotics for a throat infection. Still not happy with how Jacob was, we decided to take him to Bassetlaw A&E, where they discovered he had a very low heart rate and admitted him while they did tests. He had a CT scan and blood test and was given the all clear, however, they couldn’t find what was causing Jacob‘s low heart rate, so they wanted him to have a lumbar puncture over at Doncaster. We were transferred to Doncaster, where he had the lumbar puncture and that came back all clear. However, Jacob started going cross-eyed and getting double vision. This was a concern, as they said it can happen after a lumbar puncture, but it is rare. They decided to send him over to Sheffield Children’s Hospital to be put to sleep and have an MRI. Just before the MRI, a doctor informed us that they had looked at the CT scan from Bassetlaw and could see some fluid or swelling on Jacob’s brain. Bassetlaw and Doncaster had missed this!! The next day, Jacob had an MRI scan, and that’s when he was given the news that he had a brain tumour, but he also had seeding in other areas of his brain and down his spinal cord. The very next day, he had surgery to remove the tumour to be sent for testing. After the surgery, Jacob has been doing really well, and they’re happy with how he is doing in regards to talking, eating, walking, and memory. But yesterday we were given the devastating news that Jacob‘s tumour is cancerous and he is going to need chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and this will start next week. This is as much as we know at this moment in time as we are still waiting on more results from the testing. As you can imagine, as a family, we are devastated, so I would ask that, at this time, no further questions be asked please. I will update on Jacob‘s progress as and when we feel it necessary. Thank you all for your concern. For now, we need to spend time together as a family and get through this.”
