I am fundraising on behalf of my friend who, like me, is a hardworking childcare provider. She is due with her second child this fall, and instead of feeling secure enough to plan ahead while soaking up this beautiful time with her baby she has had to face one hurdle after the other.
In August she and her family (husband and elementary-aged son) were forced to leave their housing situation of the past four years and are currently in housing limbo. Her work contract expired this summer and she has applied for many jobs since then, spending too much time and energy interviewing with numerous families. Her pregnancy and her son’s uncertain schooling situation has derailed her ability to find a job, on top of facing discrimination over her parental duties & pregnancy when being considered as a hire. One family had her sign a contract and fired her before she was supposed to start; another had her work for a couple of weeks before saying that they would enroll their child in daycare instead, without notice or severance. Domestic workers are often taken advantage of, but I seriously believe her pregnancy has amplified this mistreatment.
Housing, her child's school situation, and economic stress (all made worse by the pandemic) have seriously impacted her. She has been dealing with way too much and deserves a break for the end of her pregnancy and first months with her newborn. All I want is for her to have the financial stability to take maternity leave, instead of searching desperately for a full-time gig as an expecting mother. As a doula and fellow nanny, I know all too well that she deserves this time with her developing baby in peace and a sense of security at this pivotal time in her life.
ANY amount helps. If we can help her take even a month or two before jumping back into work, I believe it would drastically change her healing process and bonding with her baby, while giving them an opportunity to figure out a long-term housing situation.
Please consider lending a hand for this amazing parent and caregiver, who has been working tirelessly through these obstacles for her family's security and future. She is a gem in our small community and I am tired of seeing her struggle!
