Toronto has a homeless crisis! … except unlike most other crisis situations, this one that we witness daily is not being treated with any urgency. In fact, it's seemingly not being addressed at all. Neighbours and even friends have crossed that thin line between barely affordable housing to non-affordable. We are witnessing tent cities being built and then torn down for violating public space laws and with the handful of shelters that exist here in Toronto and the affordable housing crisis escalating, these neighbours of ours have no option but to lay their heads on the cold gravel and risk their lives daily. Living without basic human needs is a theme that is growing in Toronto . The intention of this documentary is to provide a space where the voices of these vulnerable neighbours of ours are heard loud and clear. A space where those of us fortunate enough to have heat and a hot meal get the play -by -play on a day in the life of these survivors, who don't quite know if they will survive the cold winter nights and wake up alive. I need to make this film because this issue grows and grows and yet the solutions seem to be fewer and fewer. And the voices of our houseless neighbours are often not the voices considered in the discussions around viable solutions. The stigma against homeless people has increased and my intention is for people to learn their names, learn about the babies they've lost, learn about what forced them on the street or why it might feel like their only viable choice. My intention is for all of us to see their hearts and know their fight and to prioritize this issue as one that needs our love and attention... and fast. These are our neighbours. These are human beings!
I am raising money not only to be able to give honorariums to my tiny production and post-production crew for their contributions in bringing this very important story to life but 50% of the funds raised will be used to pay our storytellers and homeless neighbours who are volunteering their time and vulnerable experiences. Payments in the form of monetary fees, blankets, warm winter clothes and jackets, hot meals, toys for children, and more will be given from this fundraising initiative to our cast.
Amplifying this issue and shining a bigger light on it is something I need to do as an advocate, activist, artist, and storyteller and I hope that you will consider contributing to this initiative to help shine this light and be a part of a heart-centred and informed solution
Thank you in advance from the bottom of my heart.
** Please include your first and last name with your donation. As I am not a registered charity, unfortunately I cannot issue a tax receipt however we would love to be able to thank you for your generosity and contribution in our closing film credits.
Log line: On that fine line between living and dying, we follow some of Toronto's most vulnerable as they share their fight for survival in a city that seems to have lost its humanity.
