Help a CCU Alum and Teacher buy a Wheelchair Van

In 2018, our awesome friend Jade met and married the love of her life. Larry was a natural caregiver who often joked that asking him out was the only foolish thing Jade had ever done - while anyone who ever knew this loving, supportive couple knew how blessed they were to have each other. Larry adored Jade and Jade adored Larry. Larry's physical strength and loving heart gave her a level of mobility, independence and quality of life that was otherwise unattainable.

This October, Larry passed away very unexpectedly from a heart attack. Jade is not only grappling with the emotional toll of losing such a loving partner, but also with the harsh reality of life without his physical support. Larry’s strength enabled him to transfer Jade from her wheelchair to their car. The devastating loss of her husband has left Jade emotionally distraught and physically house-bound, with awful impact on her quality of life and her ability to travel to medical appointments.

The story of how Jade figured out her husband passed is out of a horror movie. Jade sensed something was wrong when Larry was not responding to her from the other room. Panic overtook her thinking and she threw herself off her bed in hopes of army crawling to him.

However, that did not happen and Jade was wedged between medical equipment unable to move or contact help, while her phone was on the bed and her apple watch on the charger. Jade was stuck there for 36 hours. Her mother was in Massachusetts and sensed something was wrong when no one was responding to calls and texts and made the police do a welfare check. Thank God her mom followed her intuition because Jade spent over a month in the hospital treating a bilateral pulmonary embolism.

After dealing with her own health emergencies she was lucky enough to recover and to move in with her mom in a completely accessible home. The only problem being that Jade was so accustomed to Larry completely lifting her and putting her in vehicles that she can no longer make the transfer on her own even with significant help.

So let's help Jade get her own van! If everyone we knew gave $20 bucks we could her a new van for Christmas!!
